EU continues to mull move to 30 percent emission reduction target

In 2009 the EU put in place the Climate and Energy Package in order to achieve its 2020 targets of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 20 percent below their 1990 levels and increasing the share of renewable energy to 20 percent. The EU is also committed to reducing emissions by 30 percent by 2020 under the right conditions. As such, in May 2010, the Commission presented its analysis of options to move beyond the 20 percent GHG emission reductions target. In October 2010 the Council invited the Commission to further elaborate options in this respect and to conduct analyses on the consequences at the Member State level. A leaked draft Commission Working Document purports to respond to such request.
