Further Strengthening of U.S. and EU Sanctions Against Iran

The U.S. government has continued to strengthen sanctions policies regarding Iran since the beginning of 2012, and the U.S. Congress appears to be poised to intensify them further. As U.S.-Iran tensions increase, the embargo applicable to U.S. companies and individuals on financial and trade transactions with Iran is nearly comprehensive. At the same time, U.S. authorities are taking unprecedented steps to threaten and punish non-U.S. firms for conducting certain types of business with Iran, particularly in the petroleum sector. EU sanctions against Iran are also moving toward an expansiveness that is unusual in European history, as EU authorities are scheduled to impose a ban on Iranian oil imports, effective July 2012.
