Supervision and Feedback

Law is an academic subject, but the successful lawyer is much more than simply an academic mind, however brilliant. Devising a strategy that works requires creativity, common sense and mental dexterity, as well as a sound grasp of the law.

Each year we look to take on a small, select group of graduates. Being part of that group means you will have the best possible training. With a smaller intake comes greater access: meaning early exposure to important clients and global business.

You may find yourself thrown in at the deep end. That is why we only want to hear from the highest quality candidates. We choose people who want to be at the heart of the matter: close to the client and part of the team. So you can expect early responsibility, whether it is dealing with a client or a specific assignment. But don’t worry – support and advice will be readily available. Together we make a great team.

Each trainee shares an office with a partner or senior associate, making it easier to ask questions. It ensures that the training is often one-to-one, which is the best way to learn. And we want you to keep learning. We take it as read that you will pick up the substance, so instead we focus on your ability to build relationships, communicate effectively and think commercially.

Progress is formally monitored every three months at mid-seat and end-of-seat appraisals. We use the appraisal process to track our trainees’ development as lawyers and to identify training needs. However, trainees are encouraged to seek feedback throughout their training contract from each of the lawyers for whom they work. Our trainees are required to keep a training diary to record their training, learning and development.
